Steve Carell might not be able to steal the moon ... but, his new movie's off to such a great start, the producers may be able to buy it when all is said and done.

"Despicable Me 4" -- once again starring Carell as lovable villain-turned-father Gru -- opened July 3, just in time for the holiday weekend ... and, it brought in a  whopping five-day total of $122 million.

More than $75 million just came out of the three-day weekend ... so, a pretty major holiday bump for the overall-clad Minions -- but, even without the extra days, the flick still opened well.

Sam Worthington's showing love for the late, great producer Jon Landau ... lauding his leadership abilities -- and, referring to their hit movie "Avatar."

The actor shared a statement with Deadline early Sunday in honor of producer Jon Landau who passed away Saturday ... saying JL was a passionate producer who led with humor, strength and compassion.

And, Worthington's honoring him through what they made together too ... writing, "The People say all energy is borrowed and someday you have to give it back. I see you, Jon.” The Na’vi -- the main alien tribe from their hit movies "Avatar" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" -- are also known as "The People."

Emma Roberts is doubling down on how nepo baby status ain't all it's cracked up to be ... claiming once again it's lost her jobs -- but never helped her land one.

Zak Bagans is conjuring up a frightening movie prop to add to his Haunted Museum ... a demon from "The Conjuring 2" horror film.

The "Ghost Adventures" star tells TMZ ... he just got his hands on the original demon prop used in filming for the sequel, designed by 'TC2' director James Wan and special makeup effects designer Justin Raleigh.

Zak says Wan considers this animatronic suit the best demon he's ever used.

Danny Trejo's saying farewell to his beloved Chihuahua Dixie ... a mini-yet-mighty dog that certainly made fans laugh, but Danny tells TMZ she also struck fear into the hearts of his other pets.

Dixie died this week at 16, and Danny's obviously heartbroken -- but he told us he's also full of joy for the smiles and laughs the tough-as-nails pooch provided by scaring the hell out of his pit bulls and Rottweilers. As he puts it, Dixie ran his house!

'Chinatown' Screenwriter Robert Towne Dead at 89

Robert Towne, a super-famous screenwriter who won an Oscar for his script for "Chinatown," is dead.

Robert died Monday at his L.A. home, according to a statement Tuesday from his publicist, Carrie McClure. The cause of death was not revealed.

In addition to winning an Academy Award for 1974's classic movie "Chinatown," Robert also wrote two other big movies in the 70s ... "The Last Detail" and "Shampoo."
