U.S. Women's National Team Soccer Program Needs Big Changes ... Says Taylor Twellman

The U.S. Women's National Team is at a fork in the road after their incredibly disappointing World Cup, according to former soccer star-turned-analyst Taylor Twellman, who tells TMZ Sports the team has to make changes, or they'll be passed up by the world.
The ex-USMNT forward -- who played professionally from 2000 to 2010 -- didn't pull his punches when analyzing the USWNT's shocking loss to Sweden in Melbourne, Australia ... and their overall performance in the world's biggest soccer tournament.
"In this World Cup, technical, tactical -- they were completely outdone!" the 43-year-old said. "It was obvious."
Twellman continued, not mincing his words ... "They didn't score a goal in 238 minutes. You are the number one nation in the world, that's inexplicable. So now this is a watershed moment."
Of course, the team, tourney-betting favorites, were looking to make history by becoming the first country to win 3 World Cups in a row. Unfortunately for American fans, that didn't happen.
After beating Vietnam 3-0 (they were around 7 goal faves), the U.S. tied both Portugal and the Netherlands, barely squeaking into the knockout round of 16, before losing to Sweden on penalty kicks. The loss dashed any hopes of a third straight W.C. ... and sent the women on a flight headed back home.
Now, for how to fix things ... Twellman has an idea of what needs to be done.
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. I think top to bottom, the United States Federation on the women's side has to look at development, they have to look at the collegiate part of it, they have to look at the development within the professional leagues," Taylor said, continuing, "Are the professional leagues developing the players the right way? Is technique a huge part of it, or is it just about being bigger, faster, and stronger than the other countries? It's not gonna work anymore."
Twellman added ... "This women's World Cup has exposed the failure of the United States women to develop, and this generation I think did not carry on the mentality that winning comes first, everything else is secondary, and I think some of that criticism has been correct on that."
Of course, the mentality is precisely what U.S. soccer legend Carli Lloyd pointed out last week when she called out her former team for celebrating in the wake of another subpar performance.
"I really think it's telling that she brought it up because what we saw during the World Cup kind of backs Carli Lloyd's opinion," Twellman said.
We also talked to Taylor, who is Apple's top soccer analyst, about Lionel Messi's amazing start with Inter Miami ... and just how far the team can go with the soccer immortal playing at this level.
"I get it, Lionel Messi and [Sergio] Busquets just showed up but this is the worst team in Major League Soccer regular season," Twellman said.
"I think they can get to the Final but I think the semifinal and final are gonna be the two most difficult games if they get passed the quarterfinals."

Lionel Messi Fan Throws Haymakers In Wild Fistfight ... At Game In Dallas
While Lionel Messi was dazzling on the field on Sunday night, one of his supporters was throwing haymakers in a wild brawl in the stands ... and the fight was all captured on video.
The crazy scuffle happened at some point during Inter Miami's game against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas ... when one Lionel fan apparently got so enraged with some Dallas supporters, he decided to throw fists.
Woah lol 😂 chill, it’s just a game bruh pic.twitter.com/bjmU6ooMZ4

You can see in footage shot by a bystander, the man wearing Messi's Argentina No. 10 jersey whaled on one FC Dallas fan over and over again ... while two others got into a mixup nearby.
Eventually, three of the men involved in the altercation spilled onto the ground after a big takedown from the Messi fan.
No word on how the fracas was ultimately broken up -- though a spokesperson for the Frisco Police Dept. tells TMZ Sports one arrest was made.

The guys missed a hell of a performance by Messi amid their tiff ... 'cause the 36-year-old -- who just made his MLS debut last month -- scored two goals and made a penalty kick in a shootout to help give his team a come-from-behind 4-4 win.
Up next for Messi and Inter Miami is the Leagues Cup's quarterfinals ... for everyone's sake, let's all try to behave better there.

Donald Trump Rips USWNT After World Cup Loss ... 'Woke Equals Failure'
Donald Trump is dancing on the U.S. Women's National Team's grave after its early exit from the World Cup ... mocking Megan Rapinoe and dogging the squad for being too woke.
#45 went to Truth Social to sound off on Team USA after their disappointing loss to Sweden over the weekend ... and he pointed the finger at their political beliefs for getting in the way.
"The 'shocking and totally unexpected' loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden," Trump said.
"Many of our players were openly hostile to America -- No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close. WOKE EQUALS FAILURE."
Trump -- who has famously beefed with Rapinoe after she said she wasn't going to visit the "f***ing White House" to celebrate USA's 2019 World Cup win -- also singled her out for airmailing her penalty kick attempt that could have helped the Red, White and Blue advance to the next round.
"Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!!! MAGA."
Of course, Rapinoe has always been outspoken in support of equal pay, LGBTQ+ rights and social justice ... even kneeling for the national anthem in recent years, something that left Trump pissed.
As for President Joe Biden, he took a different approach from his political nemesis ... saying, "You’ve made your country proud. Congratulations on an incredible run. This team is something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how you continue to inspire Americans with your grit and determination – on and off the field."

U.S. Women's Soccer World Cup Defeat Hurray'd By the 'Go Woke, Go Broke' Crowd
The Americans were bounced in the Women's World Cup -- and if you can believe it ... there are many here in the States who are celebrating their defeat, all because of politics.
For anyone who wants a true sense of how divided the USA is right now, go ahead and hop on Twitter to see the reactions to Megan Rapinoe and co. being beaten by Sweden in PKs Sunday ... which ends their World Cup run, and sees Rapinoe retire on a down note.
BREAKING: Woke US Women’s Soccer Humiliation
— Benny Johnson (@bennyjohnson) August 6, 2023 @bennyjohnson
After winning back-to-back World Cups the heavily favored Team USA has been ELIMINATED by Sweden in the 16th round.
Team USA’s downfall was delivered by anti-America, anti-woman activist Megan Rapinoe’s EMBARRASSING free kick here 🥴 pic.twitter.com/uO3aDQcYbl
A ton of people -- mostly conservatives, it seems -- are crapping on the USWNT and arguing that the team, at large, is reaping what they've sown here ... citing political stances some have taken, including how they handled the National Anthem at the start of the tournament.
You'll recall ... several starters for Team USA stood in silence during the 'Star-Spangled Banner' during their opening match against Vietnam -- and it pissed a lot of folks off.
Dear Megan Rapinoe,
— Eric Spracklen🇺🇸 (@EricSpracklen) August 6, 2023 @EricSpracklen
We will never forget your disrespect.
Sincerely,
America pic.twitter.com/IfKKbUr9UO
Of course, there were also comments Rapinoe made last year about trans athletes in women's sports -- which she unequivocally supported in fiery statements. That, too, rubbed a certain demographic the wrong way -- and now, a victory lap is being had at her expense.
This is a snapshot of where America is right now ... where culture wars dominate pretty much every aspect of pop culture, which are getting uglier and more contentious by the day.
On an objective level ... there are also some saying Team USA just wasn't up for going the distance this year, evidenced by their level of play and lack of effective offense. They squeaked by the early round ... and many felt other teams were simply better than us.
There was also a question about attitude ... something former USWNT star Carli Lloyd tore into the other day after the Americans seemed happy to settle for a 0-0 tie with Portugal.
That was a fair criticism -- but actively rooting against your own country's team feels like a step too far ... and yet, it was happening en masse this weekend. Sad times.

It may have been raining cats and dogs in Utah, but one furry creature literally fell from the sky at a recent Real Salt Lake MLS game ... 'cause a raccoon came crashing down into the press box!!
The wild moment happened at the RSL vs. Club Leon match that was slated to go down on Thursday ... and during a weather delay, a hole formed in the ceiling above the journalists.
All of a sudden, a trash panda dropped into the room outta nowhere ... and the scene from inside was quite hectic.
A local reporter shared a clip from the madness -- apparently, the critter was hungry ... 'cause it made a mad dash for the popcorn machine as soon as it landed in the press box.

Eventually, the raccoon made its way to the concourse at America First Field ... where it got held up on a second-floor overhang as stadium workers used a broom to try and catch it.
The raccoon crawled it's way up toward safety ... but as it reached the top of the railing, the curious creature slipped and plummeted to the floor.
Fans chased after the raccoon on the ground level ... with the procyonid showing off some shifty speed before it was eventually captured.

Soccer Star Erling Haaland Busts Out 'Flower' Dance Moves!!! ... With Blackpink's Jisoo
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland could double as a K-pop idol ... 'cause the soccer superstar just got a personal dance lesson from Blackpink's Jisoo!!
The athlete and singer met up for a one-on-one interview during Man City's visit to Seoul as part of its preseason tour of Asia last month ... and at one point in the conversation, Jisoo gave Haaland a tutorial on how to do the viral dance to her solo song, "Flower," which has nearly 350 MILLION views on YouTube.
Of course, the "Flower Challenge" was a big thing on TikTok ... with a bunch of users trying out the dance craze.
While Haaland didn't do the whole dance, he was able to nail the hand movements from his seat ... even getting his own flower props to execute the routine.
Jisoo gave her stamp of approval on Haaland's attempt ... with the entire room clapping following his impromptu performance.
Haaland also came bearing gifts ... handing Jisoo a customized Man City jersey -- complete with No. 103, in honor of her birthday (January 3).
But don't start shipping Haaland and Jisoo -- the singer is currently dating Korean actor Ahn Bo Hyun, their reps confirmed Thursday -- and Erling is dating Isabel Johansen.
Regardless ... add Haaland to the Blink fandom!!

Tom Brady Going From Football To Fútbol ... Becomes Part Owner Of Birmingham City
Tom Brady is racking up teams like Super Bowl rings -- the retired NFL superstar has become part owner of yet another sports organization ... this time, it's the Birmingham City Football Club.
The G.O.A.T. announced the business move in a hype video on Thursday ... saying "he's officially coming on board" the English Football League Championship squad.
"And maybe you're asking what do you know about English football, Tom?" Brady said in the clip. "Well, let's just say I've got a lot to learn. But I do know a few things about winning, and I think they may translate pretty well."
Here we go! Proud to be part of the Blues family 💙💙💙 @BCFC pic.twitter.com/lSEbzzpcBk
— Tom Brady (@TomBrady) August 3, 2023 @TomBrady
Brady -- who joins the club's current owners, Knighthead Capital Management LLC -- will also serve as chairman of the advisory board.
"I know success starts with the work put in when the world isn't watching," Brady added. "I know a team is nothing without the city that shows up and stands behind it."
"Most importantly, I know I like being the underdog. The road's been long for Birmingham, but these fans have never stopped believing."
The Blues will hope Brady's winning will rub off on them ... 'cause the team finished 17th in England's second-tier league last season.
Birmingham City also addressed the move in a statement ... saying Brady will work directly with the team's sports science department to share his knowledge on "health, nutrition, wellness, and recovery systems and programs."
"I'll see you at St Andrew's soon," TB12 added. "It's time to get to work."
Brady has clearly found a new hobby in sports ownership after retiring in February -- his collection now includes Birmingham City, the Las Vegas Raiders, the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces, a Major League Pickleball team, and, most recently, an E1 World Championship electric boat racing franchise.
BTW -- Thursday happens to be Brady's 46th birthday ... so, not a bad present for himself!!

Carli Lloyd Rips USWNT For Celebrating ... After Draw In World Cup
Carli Lloyd wasn't feeling all the smiling and dancing after the USWNT scored a draw vs. Portugal, narrowly advancing in the World Cup ... she called out her former team, saying they're fortunate they're not going home!
If you missed it, the U.S. Women's National Team faced Portugal early Tuesday morning, barely escaping with the 0-0 tie ... after Portugal's Ana Capeta's extra time kick nearly netted the game's first goal. Fortunately for the U.S., the ball deflected off the goalpost.
With the draw, the U.S. advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup ... and players were clearly happy, celebrating on the pitch.
The visual didn't sit right with Lloyd -- a 2x Olympic gold medalist and 2x World Cup winner -- who took a shot at the team after another uninspiring effort on the field.
"I have never witnessed," the 41-year-old said on FOX Soccer, "and just seeing these images for the first time at the desk – I have never witnessed something like that."
Portugal was this close 😬 pic.twitter.com/UMIZnAqyib
— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) August 1, 2023 @FOXSoccer
"There's a difference between being respectful of the fans and saying hello to your family, but to be dancing, to be smiling."
Lloyd continued calling out the USWNT, crediting the goalpost with saving the game for 'Merica.
"I mean the player of that match was the post. You are lucky to not be going home right now."
USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski responded to Lloyd's comment, saying it was "insane" to question the mentality of the team.
But, Lloyd's not the only one who's questioning the USWNT ... and many fans have been none too pleased with the results on the field (3-0 win over Vietnam, draws vs. Netherlands and Portugal).
"People across America stayed up super late or woke up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT to watch yall play a half-hearted game, at best. You put more effort into your outfits and pre and post-game dance moves and than you did the actual game," one fan commented.
Onward, together. pic.twitter.com/hWmD3PM7XK
— U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) August 1, 2023 @USWNT
"You're letting down fans that are, and have been, dedicated to this team and it's honestly so disappointing. Get your focus where it needs to be and actually play like a team and a group we can be proud of, win or lose."
The USWNT returns to the pitch on August 6 in the round of 16 as they continue their quest for a historic, third straight World Cup victory.
Do that ... and we're sure Carli Lloyd will take the photos for you!

45-year-old Brady also said he was pumped that the league -- which is aiming to have 10 teams with mixed-gender pilots -- will be more environmentally friendly than other racing sports.
As for how Tom got started in the process ... he told CNN this week he fell in love with the boating culture following his move to Tampa Bay in 2020.
