Brittney Griner Asked Court For House Arrest ... Request Was Denied

UPDATE

7:19 AM PT -- 3/18 -- We're learning more about Brittney Griner's hearing in Moscow on Thursday. Sources close to the situation tell TMZ Sports the hearing was actually requested by the WNBA star's legal team. They asked the court to allow BG to be released on house arrest.

UPDATE

The request was denied by the court ... something our sources say the Griner legal team expected.

UPDATE

As for the May 19 date ... that's when Griner is expected to return to court. If the Russian investigators need more time, they'll request an extension in May.

UPDATE

Once the investigation is complete, we're told a trial date will be set.

UPDATE

We're also told Griner's legal team has been able to visit her on several occasions at the location where she's being held.

UPDATE

According to our sources, Griner is "OK," but clearly wants to return home as soon as possible.

Brittney Griner was in a Russian court on Thursday ... and will remain in custody for AT LEAST another two months after they extended the arrest of the WNBA star, who's accused of bringing drugs into the country.

Video was released showing the Phoenix Mercury center walking, presumably outside the Moscow-area courtroom, flanked by two female guards. The footage is the first we've seen of 31-year-old Griner since she was taken into custody weeks ago.

Russian news agency TASS says the Moscow court granted more time to investigate the alleged crimes ... and "extended the period of detention of the U.S. citizen Griner until May 19."

Griner has been in custody since February after Russian customs officials claim they found hashish oil (vape cartridges) in her carry-on luggage at an airport.

As for the conditions of her "detainment," TASS reports she's sharing a cell with two other women who have no prior convictions. They also reported the 6'7" athlete was issued a bed too short for her frame.

After her arrest, Russian officials said they opened up a drug trafficking investigation into Griner.

Everyone from NBA and WNBA stars, actors and actresses, to Griner's wife has called on the country to release Griner ... to no avail.

"There are no words to express this pain," Griner's wife, Cherelle, said earlier this month.

"I'm hurting, we're hurting. We await the day to love on you as a family."

Several prominent politicians have spoken out about Griner's arrest -- including Hillary Clinton, who recently wrote "Free Brittney" on social media.

U.S. Congressman Colin Allred -- who also happened to attend Baylor U. -- recently told us he hopes Griner doesn't become a political pawn during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Many fear Griner -- who has played pro basketball in Russia for years -- could be used as a bargaining chip against America ... as the west has levied very stiff sanctions against the country.

'Grey's Anatomy' Crew Member Wrongly Arrested On-the-Job ... Sues City of L.A., Cops for Racial Profiling

A driver for "Grey's Anatomy" is accusing LAPD of racial profiling after officers pulled him over at gunpoint and arrested him in front of the cast and crew ... only to discover they had the wrong guy.

Ernest Simon Jr., who is Black, says he'd just dropped off crew members near a Tarzana, CA set in March 2021 when he got pulled over. In a lawsuit filed Thursday, he says officers told him an automated license plate reader linked his vehicle to a stolen BMW sedan, which was pretty shocking to Ernest ... because, at the time, he was driving a Ford van rented by Disney.

Ernest says the parking lot attendant where he'd pulled over told the cops Ernest was part of the 'Grey's' crew ... still, with guns drawn, they made him lie face down on the asphalt, and even called for backup. In the suit, obtained by TMZ, he says no fewer than 7 cop cars raced to the scene ... and he claims they also called for helicopter support.

Other crew members recognized what was happening, and Ernest says they tried explaining to cops they had the wrong guy -- but in docs, he says cops only yelled at them "Get out of the line of fire." He says that, combined with the fact he was Black, had him terrified he was about to get shot.

Now handcuffed, while still lying on the ground ... Ernest claims the crazy scene went on for about 30 minutes. According to his lawsuit, it only ended when a white male co-worker reiterated to officers they had the wrong guy -- which is the same story he claims a Black male co-worker had already told cops, but to no avail.

At that point, cops took off the cuffs and released Ernest, but he doesn't think it's a coincidence this happened in Tarzana -- an L.A. suburb, where he points out the population is 70.7 percent white, and only 3.6 percent Black.

He's now suing LAPD and the city of Los Angeles for $20 million, claiming they racially profiled him, violated his 4th Amendment rights and used excessive force.

Fox 32 Chicago
UPDATE

6:25 PM PT -- Jussie just walked out of jail in Chicago ... and he was flanked by a bunch of security guards as he was whisked away into a waiting SUV and drove off into the night.

UPDATE

There was a media circus Wednesday outside the Cook County Jail, with dozens of reporters and cameras waiting for Jussie to be released from custody ... and he walked right by without saying a word.

UPDATE
UPDATE

Jussie's legal team talked, though, and they had quite a lot to say ... railing against the judge who sentenced him to jail time, claiming the sentence was unconstitutional and draconian.

UPDATE

There was finally some insight on what nearly a week in jail was like for Jussie ... his lawyers said when they were talking to him at one point through a glass barrier it looked like Jussie had given up and lost hope in the constitution.

Fox 32 Chicago
UPDATE

One of Jussie's attorneys, Tina Glandian, tells TMZ ... "We are gratified that Jussie will be back with his family and loved ones and look forward to a dispassionate review and reversal of the serial injustices visited upon him."

Jussie Smollett is going free -- at least for now -- while he tries to get his sentence for the hoax attack overturned.

The appeals court ordered Jussie's release during the appeal process. He's being released from Cook County Jail on his own recognizance, but if he misses any future hearings it'll cost him $150,000. It's unclear when exactly he'll be walking free.

Clearly, the state isn't happy with the decision ... its response to the ask for release reads, in part, "Rather than attempt to meet his burden of showing good cause for his immediate release, Mr. Smollett makes only cursory, woefully undeveloped arguments. Each fails to demonstrate good cause to stay his jail sentence."

As you know, Jussie had begun serving his 5 months last Thursday -- and immediately after the judge sentenced him he was defiant ... shouting he was innocent and raising his fist in the air as he was taken out of court in handcuffs.

His defense team and family members never stopped pressing for his release, though ... claiming Jussie was in physical danger while behind bars. They cited racist and homophobic threats they'd received, and also said Jussie was immunocompromised ... and highly susceptible to contracting COVID-19 while in jail

Shanna Moakler Dr. Drew to the Rescue ... Offers Couples Counseling

Shanna Moakler is indeed trying to repair her relationship with her ex-bf after his domestic violence arrest, and she's calling in Dr. Drew for some professional help.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ … Shanna and Matthew Rondeau will soon begin counseling sessions with the former "Loveline" host, and it became a priority for them once they found out she's pregnant.

We're told the exes haven't met with Dr. Drew in person yet, but they've already had initial conversations by phone. They believe talking through their issues is the healthiest approach, knowing it's the mature thing to do ... and necessary considering they'll eventually have to co-parent.

As we reported, Shanna and Matthew were spotted in Rhode Island over the weekend. Rumors were flying about them getting back together even though eyewitnesses told us they weren't showing affection during their time out together.

As for what they've been discussing ... we're told it's not a romantic reunion. Our sources say they're primarily seeking Dr. Drew's help due to Shanna's 4th pregnancy. Remember, she announced it by saying she had "a very difficult week, but I'm taking everything day by day."

One week before that surprising news, Matthew had been arrested for felony domestic violence for allegedly getting physical with Shanna during an argument. He posted a hate-filled rant before cops hauled him in, calling Shanna a cheater and saying he'd never get back with her.

We're told the end goal is for both of them to move forward in a healthy way for their child's sake. Of course, Dr. Drew's done lots of counseling for reality TV, but we're told Shanna and Matthew haven't discussed that yet.

Jussie Smollett Removed From Psych Ward ... Thanks to Fans, Says Brother

UPDATE

2:00 PM PT -- A rep for the Sheriff's office tells TMZ, "Mr. Smollett’s housing unit was changed Monday to a different cell within Division 8. He was moved from that cell because Cermak Health Services needed his cell for another detained person. This was a decision made by the medical professionals. Mr. Smollett was never restrained to a bed or anything else in the cell. The bed was never equipped with restraints."

UPDATE

They continue, "Mr. Smollett remains housed in his own cell with officers stationed at the open door to his cell to ensure that he is under direct observation at all times. As with all detained persons, Mr. Smollett is entitled to have substantial time out of his cell in the common areas on the tier where he is housed."

Jussie Smollett is out of the psych ward at Cook County Jail ... something his brother believes only happened because fans applied public pressure.

Jocqui Smollett thanked people Monday night on social media for their support in the "Free Jussie" movement. He says Jussie's removal from the psych ward is a big step forward ... and gets him out of a restrained bed and into a normal one.

MOVED OUT OF PSYCH

He adds, "Cook County doesn't really move until they get bad publicity ... keep continuing to call Cook County Jail checking in on him and keep saying that you believe he should be free."

Jocqui says the pressure added on the county is what got Jussie moved, and he thinks continued force can make him a free man once again.

As we've reported, Jussie was put in the ward because the area houses high-profile inmates, according to law enforcement sources. Jocqui expressed concern immediately, saying official paperwork stated his brother was at risk of self-harm ... something he thinks is B.S.

'Alaskan Bush People' Bear Brown Arrested For Domestic Violence

UPDATE

9:21 AM PT -- According to the police report, obtained by TMZ, the argument between Raiven and Brown was caused over a back and forth the two had about cleaning their camp trailer for a move. Raiven told cops she asked Brown to watch their son, and things blew up from there.

UPDATE

In the report, Raiven claims things got physical between her and Brown -- and he allegedly pushed and pinned her down on a bed. Officers say they observed a scratch on Raiven, but no other physical injuries.

UPDATE

However, during the argument, Raiven was also on the phone with some of her family members -- who told cops they could hear Raiven yell, "Ow, you're hurting me!" and could hear Brown calling her a "bitch."

UPDATE

For his part, Brown told cops he attempted to grab Raiven's phone, but never got physical with her. That clearly wasn't enough for cops, who placed him under arrest.

"Alaskan Bush People" star Bear Brown has been arrested for domestic violence and is now in the Okanogan County Jail ... as the show kicks off its 13th season.

34-year-old Solomon Isaiah Freedom Brown -- AKA "Bear" -- was booked Friday for 4th-degree domestic violence. He was released Monday without bail.

Brown married Raiven Adams in January of this year, after getting engaged in August 2019. Just 2 weeks after their engagement he said they "made the difficult decision to part ways as a couple."

The day after their split, they announced Adams' pregnancy, and decided to give their relationship another shot. They separated again, before reconciling once more. Brown held his son, River, for the first time at 6 months old.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

"Alaskan Bush People" is currently in its 13th season on the Discovery Channel ... the show follows the Brown family that considers themselves a "wolf pack" -- isolating themselves from civilization for months at a time, attempting to survive in the wilderness.

The Sun was first to report the arrest.

We have reached out to Bear's reps, Discovery Channel, and the Sheriff's Office that made the arrest ... so far, no word back.

Emmett Till's Cousin Loves Taraji's Spotlight on Emmett When Talking Jussie ... The System's Unfair to People of Color

Taraji P. Henson thinks there's a parallel between Jussie Smollett and Emmett Till -- and wouldn't you know it ... the late teen's own family agrees.

Emmett's cousin, Deborah Watts, the co-founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation, tells us Taraji's heart is in the right place -- namely, that Black people and other POC are unfairly treated in the criminal justice system.

Taraji made the point while Jussie is serving jail time for a crime that wasn't violent ... nobody did any time (or was even found guilty) in Emmett's case all those years ago, suggesting race was at play in how Jussie was sentenced.

Watts doesn't quite make that leap -- not wanting to comment on the fairness of Jussie's conviction.

Big picture ... she absolutely agrees that BIPOC are disproportionately incarcerated compared to white people for the same sorts of offenses -- something she says is proven in data ... and something she thinks Taraji was trying to spotlight.

To that end ... Watts tells us she appreciates TPH's support and for getting Emmett's name back into the public, because his case was never officially solved.

Freddie Gibbs doesn't have much sympathy for Jussie Smollett ... he says Jussie belongs behind bars for breaking the law, plain and simple.

We got the rapper at Cookies on Melrose and asked about Jussie's 5-month jail sentence, which the "Empire" star just started serving in Chicago.

Freddie says Jussie should be in jail just like anyone who fakes being the victim of a crime.

It's in sharp contract to Taraji P. Henson ... who is solidly behind Jussie, demanding he be released from jail and comparing Smollett's case to that of Emmett Till.

Freddie thinks Jussie should be set free ... in about 3 to 5 years ... and isn't buying Smollett's view the judge handed down a harsher sentence because he's Black.

Shanna Moakler Spotted With Matthew Rondeau 3 Weeks After Domestic Violence Arrest

Shanna Moakler was back with ex-BF Matthew Rondeau ... 3 weeks after his felony domestic violence arrest.

Eyewitnesses tell TMZ ... Shanna and Matthew were spotted Sunday night in Rhode Island. The two went to Opa Restaurant for dinner in Providence and stayed late ... leaving around 1 AM.

While the current status of their relationship is unclear, we're told they weren't showing any signs of affection during the meal.

Shanna was overheard telling a diner, "We're okay, we’re hanging in there."

We've learned the two went out for dinner the night before as well ... hitting up Los Andes in the same city.

Shanna has been telling locals she's in town because her 86-year-old father, a dentist, had recently retired ... but these encounters suggest they might be back together.

As we've reported, their relationship has been rocky  ... things got heated at the end of February when Matthew posted an aggressive video on her social media, claiming Shanna cheated on him and swearing he'd never get back with her.

Not long after the video went live, he was arrested for felony domestic violence, when he allegedly got physical with her during an argument.

Jussie Smollett Separate Federal Charges Unlikely ... For Alleged Fake Hate Mail

Jussie Smollett will almost certainly escape federal charges for allegedly faking another part of the elaborate hoax that just got him sentenced to 5 months behind bars ... the infamous hate letter.

Federal law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... barring any major future development in the fake hate mail case, the feds will NOT charge Jussie.

As we reported ... the studio received a threatening letter directed at the "Empire" star 8 days before the "attack," with scrapbook-style letters with the warning ... "You will die black f**," along with an image of a noose.

Some authorities believe Jussie sent the racist and homophobic letter to himself, hoping it would put him smack in the middle of the social justice movement.

The feds seem content with the sentence Jussie received after a jury convicted him on 5 felony counts for lying to cops about the incident. He was just sentenced to 150 days in jail with 30 months of felony probation.

Our sources say the feds feel it would be "piling on" to hit Jussie with more charges.

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, the office in charge of filing federal charges, declined to comment.

Jussie Smollett Held In Protective Custody ... Cameras On His Cell 24/7

UPDATE

11:49 AM PT -- A rep for the Cook Co. Sheriff's Office tells us Smollett's cell will be monitored by security cameras as well as an officer with a body-worn camera. They tell us Jussie will be able to have time outside of his cell in common areas, where he can watch tv and use the phone -- but other inmates will not be in the common area at that time.

UPDATE

They tell us, "The safety and security of all detained individuals, including Mr. Smollett, is the Sheriff’s Office’s highest priority."

Jussie Smollett will be held in protective custody -- as requested -- while serving his time behind bars.

Judge James Linn ordered the actor's 150-day jail sentence, and specified he'll serve it under protective custody. According to legal docs, obtained by TMZ, Judge Linn says Smollett and his team requested the protection.

The goal of protective custody is to protect an inmate from any form of harm while they serve their time.

BIZARRE CRIMES Blue Dinosaur Onesie Suspect ... Arrested in Nashville!!!

COZY CRIME

A convicted felon is trading in his now infamous blue dinosaur onesie for an orange jumpsuit ... because cops say he's back in police custody in Nashville after a truly bizarre alleged crime spree.

Here's the deal ... cops say 23-year-old Elijah Samuel Morris is the burglary suspect they've been searching for since January, when he allegedly broke into a vehicle and burglarized a home --- all while wearing a blue dinosaur onesie -- and police say he was arrested Wednesday on separate charges.

Cops say they responded Wednesday morning to reports of vehicle burglaries in progress, and officers saw Morris in a car with 2, count 'em, 2 flat tires. Police say when they hit the sirens, Morris put the car in reverse and drove off before stopping in a parking lot and fleeing on foot.

Police say they tracked Morris down and saw him try to get into another vehicle ... and cops allege he was in possession of a gun that had been reported stolen in Louisville when they made the arrest.

And, get this ... cops say arson investigators from the Nashville Fire Department also identified Morris as the suspect who they believe started a fire outside a home back in December, and now he's facing charges of aggravated arson.

Police say Morris is also charged with aggravated assault, theft of property, theft of a firearm, evading arrest, felony probation violation, possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony and felon in possession of a gun.

Morris is being held in lieu of a $171,000 bond ... so it appears he may not be back on the streets in a blue dino onesie any time soon.

Hector 'Macho' Camacho 5 Men Arrested ... For Brutal 2012 Murder

Nine years after Hector "Macho" Camacho was brutally murdered outside a bar in Puerto Rico, five men have been arrested and charged in his slaying.

Camacho -- a former 3 weight class world champion -- was shot in the face while he sat with a friend in a Ford Mustang. The boxer didn't immediately die from his injuries, but was declared brain dead by doctors. After several days on life support, Hector passed away on November 24, 2012.

The murder shocked PR and the boxing world ... and the loss was compounded by the fact the murder went unsolved for so long.

But, on Wednesday, the first of five suspects appeared before a judge, accused of killing Camacho, according to the Associated Press.

Several of the suspects were already serving time behind bars ... including three people who were in a federal penitentiary in Florida. U.S. officials transported the inmates by plane to Puerto Rico so they could face the judge.

Two other men were arrested ... one from a Puerto Rican jail, and another from his home in the early morning hours, not far from where the shooting happened nearly a decade ago.

Authorities say there were more people involved ... but those men won't have their time in court 'cause they were themselves killed in unrelated incidents in 2013 and 2015.

Camacho -- who was 50 years old at the time of his death -- faced some of the greatest fighters during his great career ... including wins over "Sugar" Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran (twice).

The motive for the crime is still unknown.

Camacho's elderly mother was thrilled with the news of the arrests, getting a modicum of justice for her late son, per the AP.

"They gave me justice."

Brittney Griner Alleged Mug Shot Released ... By Russian State Media

Brittney Griner's alleged mug shot was shared by Russian State media, marking the first time the WNBA star has been seen "publicly" since her detainment in February.

The 31-year-old center for the Phoenix Mercury was taken into custody last month at an airport near Moscow ... after Russian customs officials claim a drug dog alerted to her carry-on luggage, which allegedly contained hashish oil (for a vape).

Russian officials say they've launched a drug trafficking investigation ... and if convicted, Griner could face a decade behind bars in Russia.

Russia's state-owned news channel, Russia 24, aired a photo of Griner's mug shot. State media reported the booking photo was taken at a Russian police station, according to CNN.

The mug shot is significant because Griner has not been seen or heard from publicly in weeks.

The arrest couldn't come at a worse time for the WNBA superstar. Russia is in the midst of a full-out assault on Ukraine, and the United States and many other countries have sanctioned the Russian government, seriously ratcheting up tensions.

Now, the Russian government has a high-profile American prisoner ... and could become a pawn or bargaining chip for Putin.

As for the efforts to bring Brittney home -- we recently spoke with longtime U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham who told us the State Dept. is doing everything in its power to return the star hooper to her family and friends in the States.

WNBA Star Brittney Griner Hash Oil Claim 'Highly Skeptical' To Family of Marine Jailed in Russia

Brittney Griner's detainment in Russia is drawing a strong reaction from the family of a U.S. Marine who's also imprisoned there ... and they're not buying what the Russians are selling.

The family of Trevor Reed, a retired Marine from Texas who's been locked up in Russia since 2019, is "highly skeptical" of the allegations surrounding Brittney, because they've seen the Russians fabricate criminal cases.

That's why Reed's family rep, Jonathan Franks, tells us the family believes the claim Brittney was traveling with hashish oil could be totally bogus ... and they're accusing the Russians of manufacturing criminal charges against other Americans, including Trevor.
