Gayle King is thanking Stephen Colbert and Oprah Winfrey for providing the entertainment at her surprise birthday party ... telling us their dance moves totally made her night.

We got Gayle in New York City on Tuesday and our photog asked her about last week's big bash, which was packed with celebs.

Gayle says she was totally surprised when her best friends surprised her with a birthday party at Ci Siamo restaurant in Manhattan ... she thought she was going to a holiday party.

Of all things, a phallic laser pointer is at the center of the Jamie Foxx birthday dinner dispute, and turns out his beef was with folks from the 'Jackass' franchise's production company ... TMZ has learned.

Multiple sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ … Jamie got upset during the night out at Mr. Chow's in Bev Hills when someone from a private party in the upstairs VIP area pointed a laser at his table, projecting the image of a penis.

We're told Jamie was particularly upset because his kids were at the table, and he felt the image was disturbing -- so, he walked upstairs to the VIP room and asked the folks up there to cut it out, making it clear he didn't find their joke funny.

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King stepped out in NYC to celebrate Gayle's 70th birthday -- and, Oprah gave her longtime friend a shocking surprise.

The two pals hit up Ci Siamo -- a popular Manhattan restaurant ... Oprah in a gold dress under a long white coat and Gayle going with a more muted black and teal outfit, perfectly matching her scarf.

The two were joined by Megan Sullivan, general manager of the restaurant, who walked into the joint for what Gayle clearly thought was supposed to be a small dinner ... though Oprah had a big surprise to her.

12:04 PM PT -- A witness to the incident tells TMZ ... customers at another table were being rude and vulgar to Jamie, and he asked them to stop since his family was present ... which is when someone at that table allegedly threw the glass that hit him in the face.

10:59 AM PT -- A spokesperson for Jamie tells TMZ ... “Jamie Foxx was at his birthday dinner when someone from another table threw a glass that hit him in the mouth. He had to get stitches and is recovering. The police were called and the matter is now in law enforcement’s hands.”

Jamie Foxx was allegedly involved in a fight in the dining room of Mr. Chow Friday night ... and he may have been injured, TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us ... police were called to the popular, high-end Beverly Hills restaurant around 10 PM on the report of a fight inside.
