One thing's for sure, Lindsay Lohan looks way better in a cream colored coat and bell-bottomed black slacks, than jailhouse orange ... which she keeps narrowly dodging.

This is the best we've seen her look in a while -- however, time spent putting together one's outfit and applying one's makeup ... does NOT count as community service.

The letter apparently worked ... some media outlets are already complying.
