IN COURT

The man accused of stealing Frances McDormand's Oscar is looking way rougher around the edges than he did on Oscar night -- he made his first court appearance Wednesday, pleading not guilty.

Terry Bryant went from tux to jumpsuit for his arraignment on a charge of felony grand theft. As we reported, Bryant was arrested for swiping McDormand's award at the Governors Ball.

Bryant and his attorney, Daniel Brookman, might have an uphill battle in this case. He not only posted his own video kissing Oscar Sunday night, but was also caught leaving the ballroom with the statuette in hand as he posed for cameras.

Frances said she didn't want to press charges, but she has no say in the matter. The Academy is technically the victim, and they've asked for the case to move forward.

Bryant was released without bail after the arraignment, even though prosecutors said he has a repeated burglary history. He's due back in court later this month. Fair to say, his spiritual adviser's got a lot of praying to do.

Oscar Theft Case I'm Praying Terry Through This Mess ... Says Suspect's Rabbi

SAY WHAAAAT???
TMZ.com

The man accused of stealing Frances McDormand's Oscar has quite the support system -- including his rabbi, who says the arrest is more about society than a guy allegedly making off with someone's trophy.

Terry Bryant's arraignment was postponed Wednesday morning, but his attorney, Daniel Brookman, held a news conference outside court, where -- no offense, counselor -- rabbi Naomi Levy stole the show.

Levy told reporters Bryant's "story" served as a commentary on our society and its "obsession with its 15 minutes of fame." Hard to figure what the hell she meant ... especially considering the new video showing Bryant brandishing Frances' Oscar Sunday night, as he exited the Governors Ball!

Bryant's attorney said his client will enter a not guilty plea once he gets in front of the judge -- which we're now hearing should happen late Wednesday or Thursday.

Ya can't say Terry Bryant was trying to sneak out with Frances McDormand's Oscar, because he brazenly hoisted it up -- in full view of cameras -- as he fled Sunday night.

Associated Press cameras set up outside the Governors Ball captured the accused Oscar thief, and the video is bizarre. Bryant actually stopped outside the ballroom to make sure every camera got a shot of him with the statuette -- looking like a proud winner, and not a thief.

There's also this video of Bryant strolling into the Governors Ball WITH Frances!! It doesn't look like she knows him, but Bryant is clearly trying to make it seem like he's part of her entourage.

The talented Mr. Bryant will be on camera again Wednesday morning ... from the L.A. courtroom where he's set to be arraigned on a charge of felony grand theft. TMZ will be in court to bring you the hearing.

Kobe Bryant's Oscar win has gotten mixed reviews amid the #MeToo movement, but Matt Barnes is 100% behind his ex-NBA rival -- giving Bryant mad props for paving the way for sports stars.

"I think it's dope. He's breaking down barriers, still being great," Barnes told TMZ Sports out at Poppy in Hollywood.

Want proof? Matt says things are really coming together for a Huey Newton/Black Panthers biopic he's producing ... and he can't wait to tell "the whole truth" behind the real BP (sorry, Marvel).

Glad Kobe and Matt are over the whole ball-in-the-face thing ...

Oscar 'Thief' Terry Bryant Officially Charged with Felony Grand Theft

The man who pilfered Frances McDormand's Oscar has now been officially charged with the crime of felony grand theft ... and the stakes are years in prison.

The L.A. County D.A. has just filed the case. TMZ broke the story, although Frances has no interest in having Terry Bryant prosecuted, her Oscar is technically owned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and they want the book thrown at him.

Bryant took Frances' Oscar off her dinner table at the Governors Ball following the ceremony and then videotaped himself with the hardware. It's unclear if he intended to take the Oscar out of the Beverly Hilton.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT

Diane Warren was bummed about losing her 9th Oscar but was NOT gonna let that drag her down.

We got the songwriting legend at Madeo Monday night in Bev Hills and our guy told her he saw her at the Oscars and wanted to know if she thought there were any surprises. She shot back, "You saw me? You didn't see me win. Ninth time. Someday."

It's true ... she earned her 9th nomination for Best Original Song for "Stand Up for Something" from "Marshall." We ask her how many more nominations before she finally brings home a statue.

Watch ... Diane manages to put a good spin on the ordeal and even congratulates someone who was nominated 13 times before finally scoring a win. BTW ... sound mixer Kevin O'Connell was nominated 21 times before he finally won for "Hacksaw Ridge" in 2017.

It's coming, Diane.

Stolen Oscar Twist Frances McDormand is Not the Victim ... 'Cause She Doesn't Own It!!!

The guy who allegedly stole Frances McDormand's Oscar is not going to escape criminal charges just because she doesn't want him prosecuted ... and that's because she's not the victim.

We did some checking and it turns out the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences owns the hardware ... despite the fact the statue was bestowed on Frances and even engraved with her name. Thus the Academy is listed as the victim on the police report.

According to Academy rules, the winner of an Oscar has the right of possession but not ownership, and that's why the statue cannot legally be sold to anyone without first offering it to the Academy for $1.

Terry Bryant is currently behind bars after being arrested for felony grand theft. He took the Oscar off the table where Frances was sitting and videotaped himself with the award in hand.

Academy officials have told the LAPD they want Bryant prosecuted and that's why the case is going forward.

No word yet on whether charges will be filed.

Bryant remains in custody ... apparently he's been unable to post the $20,000 for bail.

Gary Oldman's Ex-Wife Well Done Academy Giving Oscars to 2 Alleged Abusers!

Gary Oldman's ex-wife would like to give the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences the Oscar for Best Hypocrite for doling out awards to her former hubby and Kobe Bryant.

Donya Fiorentino -- who was Gary's 3rd wife and married to him for 4 years -- expressed frustration with the Academy Monday on the heels of her ex and Kobe walking away with golden statues ... Best Actor and Best Animated Short, respectively.

She tells TMZ ... "Congratulations, Gary and congratulations to the Academy for awarding not one but two abusers with Oscars. I thought we had evolved. What happened to the #MeToo movement?"

Fiorentino accused Gary in '01 of physically and emotionally abusing her during their marriage -- and claimed in court docs that he once beat her with a phone. In the docs, obtained by TMZ, Gary said they were struggling over the phone, and that it accidentally hit her when he let go.

As for Kobe ... he was accused of raping a woman in 2003. The NBA star was charged and brought to trial, but the case fell apart when the alleged victim wouldn't cooperate. He reportedly settled the case for $5 mil, but he denies ever paying her.

Jimmy Kimmel Lake Havasu Oscars Shout-Out Saving AZ Town Cash

TRIP OF A LIFETIME
ABC

Lake Havasu is relishing in the free press from Sunday night's Oscars telecast, not only because it put the town on the map, but because the plug will save the city tons of cash on advertising in the future.

A rep from the Lake Havasu Visitor Center tells us they didn't take host Jimmy Kimmel's shout as a diss. Some thought Kimmel was poking fun at the Arizona Spring Break-friendly community by offering a free trip and a stay at the local Days Inn to whoever kept their Oscars speech the shortest.

But the LHVC says they have a sense of humor and see the silver lining since it was some free prime time advertising. The city even extended an all-expenses paid trip to the shortest speech winner, Mark Bridges, who won for Best Costume Design and got to go home with a jet ski.

It comes with a string attached ... the LHVC says they hope Mark will speak to local colleges in the area about his career when/if he visits.

We've obtained video of Terry Bryant holding McDormand's award for Best Actress, telling everyone who'd listen that the award was his. Bryant even asked other attendees if they wanted a photo with Oscar.

Bryant was arrested for felony grand theft Sunday night after grabbing McDormand's Best Actress award right off her table at The Governor's Ball. We're told McDormand alerted security at the event when she noticed her Oscar was missing, who then tracked Bryant down and contacted the police.

Lucky for Frances, she was quickly reunited with her Oscar. After the party, McDormand's rep said, "Fran and Oscar are happily reunited and are enjoying an In-N-Out burger together."

The guy who stole Frances McDormand's Oscar has been arrested ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us the man who swiped the Best Actress statue from Frances' table at The Governor's Ball Sunday night has been booked on felony grand theft.

The thief was photographed with the stolen hardware just before he was nabbed. Frances noticed her Oscar was MIA from the table and notified security at The Governor's Ball at the Hollywood & Highland Center. Security found the guy with Oscar in hand and turned him over to cops when they arrived.

Frances took home the award for Best Actress for her role in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."

Shortly after the incident, a rep for Frances said, "Fran and Oscar are happily reunited and are enjoying an In-N-Out burger together."

Oscars After-Parties Allison & Kobe Chug & Chew with Oscar!!!

Allison Janney and Kobe Bryant celebrated their Oscar win like true Americans ... with booze and burgers!!!

Allison and the Black Mamba remembered to fuel up while hitting the Oscar after-party scene hard ... with Oscar in hand, of course. They were at the Vanity Fair bash in Bev Hills and were joined by a slew of celebs.

The "Key & Peele" duo was there ... as was Oscar winner Frances McDormand, Drake, Halle Berry, Emily Ratajkowski and many more.

The famed Chateau Marmont on the Sunset Strip was also celeb central. Mary J. Blige, Salma Hayek, Tiffany Haddish, Amber Heard, Elon Musk and Anthony Anderson were all there. Cool of Nick Jonas to make his way over to the fans. Not cool of our camera guy to ask Stevie Wonder if he watched the Oscars. Habits, ya know.

Guillermo del Toro Nicest Best Director Winner Ever Poses With Latino Fans

Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro didn't let his wins for Best Picture and Best Director at Sunday's Oscars go to his head as he hit the after-party circuit in Hollywood.

We got the 'Shape of Water' director heading into the 20th Century Fox & Fox Searchlight Party at TAO with his statues in tow. On his way out, the director wandered across the street to take pictures with fans, many of who were Latinos.

Del Toro is the fourth Mexican director to win in 5 years, and it doesn't sound like he's eager to hear Trump's views on that stat.

Taraji P. Henson to Ryan Seacrest The Universe Takes Care of Good People

E!

7:51 PM PT -- Taraji told People that her comment to Ryan was "misconstrued" and that she was only trying to "keep his chin up" in light of an awkward situation, despite him being cleared by E!'s investigation. She also says she "absolutely" supports Seacrest.

Ryan Seacrest's Oscars red carpet show was business as usual except for the appearance of Taraji P. Henson.

Henson talked to Seacrest about the usual stuff, but at the end said the Universe has a way of taking care of good people ... and then she caressed his chin. So ... was this a show of support or shade? Watch and you decide.

Seacrest has been scrutinized after a woman who worked as his stylist at E! accused him of sexual misconduct between 2007 and 2010.

As TMZ reported, the woman did not file a police report or lawsuit -- presumably because the statute of limitations has run out -- but before she went to the media her lawyer contacted Seacrest and his lawyer, read them a press release with her allegations and demanded $15 million in return for tearing up the release. They told the lawyer to take a hike and he reduced the demand to 7 figures, but they sent him packing.

The woman's lawyer acknowledged to TMZ there was indeed a draft of a press release but says the demand was not $15 million.

90th Oscars J Law's Wine Night ... Behind the Scenes

Jennifer Lawrence might not have been up for an Oscar this year, but that didn't stop her from crackin' open the vino and pouring herself a glass ... or two, or more perhaps.

J Law was on the move Sunday at the 90th Academy Awards -- climbing over chairs, fixing the strap on her dress and, most notably, hugging just about everyone down in the seats ... all while holding a clutch glass of white wine that looked a bit more than half full.

Truth be told, we don't know how many she had -- but it certainly seems like Lawrence was enjoying herself at the show. And on the heels of a less than stellar box office opening for her new flick "Red Sparrow" ... why not go for the booze, right?

There's other famous folks up in here, too -- Meryl Streep, Armie Hammer, Frances McDormand, the fish monster from "The Shape of Water," and on and on.

But let's be real ... this is Jennifer's show.
