As we first reported, Brittney Jones posted the sweater last month with a starting price of $500. We're told the bidding got up to $21,000 with just a few hours to go ... when it was mysteriously pulled.

Brit got an email from eBay saying it was pulled because it didn't have "a cleaning disclaimer" -- a must for all used clothing sales. She then got another email a week later saying her listing has been restored ... so now she's trying once again to sell the sweater.

Seems Brittney is having a harder time getting rid of that sweater than Ashton is getting rid of her.

The 48-year-old was spotted yesterday in a skimpy bikini ... hanging out on a yacht in St. Barts.

Jones is even trying to play the Kim Kardashian Kard -- saying, "If Kim can survive and in fact do even better after a sex tape scandal, I guess I can, too.”

Brittney posted the sweater over the weekend with an initial asking price of $500, along with this note: "This sweater was given to me after spending the night with Ashton. I no longer have any attachment to this sweater and I am hoping someone else will enjoy it."

Ashton's lawyers have fired off a letter to Vivid Entertainment -- claiming they're specifically pissed over a press release for the video, which says, "Ashton's fans will undoubtedly enjoy seeing what the star himself may have experienced."

In the legal letter, Ashton's lawyers claim Vivid is infringing on the actor's "marketable celebrity identity value" -- and promise they will unleash a legal nightmare against Vivid unless they stop associating his name with the Brittney Jones sex tape.

U of Iowa Asst. Sports Information Director Steve Roe tells TMZ ... the NCAA has ruled that the school's explanation -- that the meeting was purely a coincidence -- was "sufficient" and no further action will be taken against the school or the recruits.

According to a report in the Des Moines Register, the University of Iowa has admitted recruiting violations tied to recruits meeting with Ashton and wife Demi Moore during an Iowa football game last month. The alleged infractions also involve the players meeting with former Iowa basketball players.

The paper says NCAA rules prohibit potential high school recruits from interacting with "individuals considered to represent a university's athletic interests." Kutcher attended the University of Iowa briefly and frequently attends games.

The report doesn't mention the players by name -- but two recruits, Marcus Paige and Josh Oglesby were quoted in published reports as having met Kutcher and Moore. Paige (above, bottom left) tweeted the above photo.

Turns out Nia Vardalos from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" called a suicide prevention center in Los Angeles after seeing Demi's grim exchange with the guy -- who was threatening to hang himself in a tree outside of his Florida home.

TMZ has obtained the phone call made between the suicide prevention center and Florida authorities during which Nia is patched in and tells cops everything she knows about the guy from the information on his Twitter account.

Cops were actually able to locate the guy using Nia's info -- and according to the police report, the guy was "sitting at his computer desk crying" when they found him.

Cops say the guy -- who admitted to needing medical help -- was placed under protective custody.

Kutcher -- who famously dated Murphy in 2002 when they starred in "Just Married" together -- tweeted, "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out to Brittany's family, her husband, and her amazing mother Sharon."

Kutcher added, "See you on the other side kid."
