Mozzy Starts 1-Year Prison Bid Rappers Are Targets … I Needed My Gun

Mozzy's having a big week -- on the heels of releasing a new album, he's now officially on the inside ... turning himself in to begin a one-year prison sentence for a federal gun charge.
Court documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop include Mozzy’s self-written letter to the judge where he calls the case a “wake-up call,” and says he's cleaned up his drug use. More relevant to the case, though, he highlights the fact a lot of Black rappers make headlines for being murdered.
Mozzy, who just inked a deal with Yo Gotti, says ... "My lawyers also told me there is a recent study that proves the number one cause of death among black rappers is murder (specifically by gunfire).” He says he's afraid his kids will end up fatherless, and that's his primary reason for carrying a gun without a permit.
He adds, “It is a fear that all black rappers carry with them, all the time. I know that does not legally justify me possessing a firearm. But I took some comfort in the fact that I knew with certainty I was not going to use that gun for illegal purposes. I wanted it solely for self-defense in case of an attack against me or my family.”
That concern echoes many of the fears French Montana warned everyone about when we talked to him shortly after Lil Tjay was shot in NJ.
Mozzy was pulled over in January 2021 in L.A., and cops found a Glock 26 plus 16 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
His “Survivor’s Guilt” album dropped last week with YG, 2 Chainz and Saweetie features … but he obviously won't be doing much promotion right now.

Brittney Griner Mural Of WNBA Star Unveiled In D.C. ... Highlights Americans Detained Abroad
-
Breaking News
- 1.4K shares
3:30 PM PT -- TMZ Sports spoke with the artist behind the mural ... who tells us the project has been in the works for months, and it took him 11 hours to complete.
Isaac Campbell says Griner's team provided the photo of her in the Team USA jersey ... which served as the inspiration for her part of the mural.
Campbell has yet to speak with Brittney's wife, Cherelle, about the piece ... but says it "would be the honor of his life" if Griner can return home and take a selfie in front of her picture on the mural.
A mural of Brittney Griner -- and 17 other Americans detained in countries like Russia -- was erected Wednesday in Washington D.C. ... all to bring awareness to Americans locked up abroad.
Of course, Griner's case has received a tremendous amount of attention, but that's not necessarily the case with all the captive U.S. citizens ... and the hope is the artwork will get the word out.
Isaac Campbell, an artist from Iowa who's in charge of the project, spent about 8 hours putting the 15 ft. tall mural together in Georgetown before opening it to the public, according to the Washingtonian.
The photos were provided by the Bring Our Families Home Campaign.
Campbell cut and pasted photos onto the wall ... using flour, water, and sugar to form a non-toxic, biodegradable glue, with help from detainees' family members and citizens passing by. It's expected to eventually fade ... but it could take weeks, months, or longer, depending on the weather.
Aside from the artwork, Campbell hopes the message behind the mural resonates with people more than the artistry, so detainees like Griner can return to the United States.
“We really need to put pressure on all people with any tools, whether that’s wheat-pasting, or whether that’s using your own personal platforms on social media to help apply pressure," Campbell said.
"Or if you’re in any stage of government, and you can provide support and begin to help bring these people home."
Other than Griner -- a star hooper for the Phoenix Mercury -- other Americans like Paul Whelan, U.S. citizen and former Marine who's been detained in Russia since 2018 on drug and espionage charges, are featured.
Griner recently pled guilty to a drug charge ... but her trial near Moscow is still ongoing (the Russian justice system is different than in America). She faces up to 10 years in prison.
Griner's next hearing is scheduled for July 26.

NBA's Miles Bridges Pleads Not Guilty ... To Felony Domestic Violence
1:19 PM PT -- 7/20 -- Bridges showed up in court and pleaded not guilty to all three charges on Wednesday. He's due back in court for another hearing in the case next month.
NBA star Miles Bridges has been charged with felony domestic violence and child abuse in Los Angeles after allegedly beating the mother of his kids ... in front of the children.
TMZ Sports broke the story late last month ... the 24-year-old former Charlotte Hornet turned himself in to authorities in L.A. the day after the alleged incident. He was ultimately released after posting $130K bond.
Now, Bridges has been slapped with "one felony count of injuring a child’s parent and two felony counts of child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death."
Controversial L.A. District Attorney George Gascon addressed the charging of Miles, saying “Domestic violence creates physical, mental and emotional trauma that has a lasting impact on survivors,”
Gascon continued ... “Children who witness family violence are especially vulnerable and the impact on them is immeasurable. Mr. Bridges will be held accountable for his actions and our Bureau of Victim Services will support the survivors through this difficult process.”
The details surrounding the alleged incident aren't entirely clear, but sources previously told us Miles and his GF were involved in an argument that turned physical.
Mychelle Johnson, the alleged victim (Mychelle identified herself), claims she was injured from the alleged attack ... saying she was diagnosed with multiple injuries including a "brain concussion, closed fracture of nasal bone, contusion of rib, multiple bruises, strain of neck muscle."
Mychelle also posted photos of the alleged incident.
At the time, Johnson said ... "I don't need sympathy," Johnson added. "I just don't want this happening to anyone else, I just want this person to get help, my kids deserve better."
The 6'7" forward is scheduled to be arraigned in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
If convicted, Bridges faces years in prison.

Lil Baby is in especially high spirits heading into his Washington, D.C. tour stop with Chris Brown, and briefly clued us in on Gunna and Young Thug's moods ... even though we interrupted his Future flow.
The 4PF Records CEO kindly stopped his rapping rendition of Future’s "Back to the Basics" Tuesday afternoon outside Reagan National Airport. We caught him right at the "DC sniped it" line, so yeah ... he was getting hyped for the Capital One Arena show.
We asked if he had any update on how Thug and Gunna are holding up on the inside, and LB pumped the brakes on the lyrics. He assured us both YSL superstars are in good spirits and added a thumbs up, which is rarely faked in this day and age!
Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.
Earlier in the week, Gunna was able to video call with some relatives, and a short clip posted online was filled with laughs ... a good sign, for sure.
And just last week, Young Thug’s sister says she paid him an in-person visit that yielded similar vibes.
Just seen Jeff … he’s all smiles & positive energy 🫶🏾🫶🏾🕸🙏🏾

Both Atlanta-based rap stars have to wait until at least 2023 before they see trial but a friend like Baby is sure to keep them plugged in the rap world.
Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.
The One Of Them Ones Tour has plenty of dates left in the tank -- D.C. is just their 4th stop -- so that should give Baby plenty of stories to share with them during visits.

Styles P I'm Pissed, But My Approach Could've Been Better When Cops Tackled Woman
-
Exclusive
LOX rapper Styles P thinks he should've handled things differently when cops took down a woman outside his Yonkers, NY business -- but he adds, some cops in the neighborhood are more about control than protection.
The artist and community leader joined us Thursday on "TMZ Live" and said the violent arrest this week makes it clear the vibe isn't great between citizens and officers -- and he's especially upset the 2 male cops got so rough with a woman.
Styles offered up a self-reflective question about the woman's race too, and how that might have played a factor in how she was arrested.
As for his approach in intervening, getting right in one cop's face -- he thinks there were better ways he could've handled himself, and really wants young people to get that message.
Still, he isn't discounting the impact PTSD -- from being a Black man in America -- influenced his response.

— No Jumper (@nojumper) July 13, 2022 @nojumper
As we reported, Styles jumped in the middle of the heated arrest Tuesday outside Juice For Life ... the juice bar he owns with Jadakiss.
His take away from the incident -- yes, police have to arrest people who break the law, but they should use the same force regardless of the suspect's race.

Jaxson Hayes Arrest Officer's Neck Kneeling Broke Policy ... Commission Rules
-
Breaking News
The officer who knelt on Jaxson Hayes' neck during his July 2021 arrest broke department protocols ... the Los Angeles Police Commission announced this week.
TMZ Sports broke the story -- body cam footage of the arrest shows the 6'11, 220-pound NBAer getting into a violent altercation with officers who responded to a call of an alleged domestic dispute at his then-girlfriend's house.
Hayes was wrestled to the ground during the incident ... and one officer appeared to put his knee on Hayes' neck. The 22-year-old is heard on video saying "I can't breathe."
A use-of-force board review into the incident determined the officer put his knee on Hayes' neck twice -- once for four seconds, and another for 11 seconds.
The review states the officer unintentionally applied pressure to Hayes' trachea or windpipe ... although it was not enough to make him go unconscious, according to the LA Times.
The investigation concluded anyone with the same experience and training would know the officer's actions were not "proportional, objectively reasonable, or necessary."
It is unclear if the ruling will result in punishment for the officer.
Hayes was also tased twice during the incident ... but it was determined to be justified due to the hooper's level of resistance.
Hayes was hit with 12 charges as a result of the incident. He later pleaded no contest to resisting arrest and false imprisonment ... and was sentenced to three years probation, 450 hours of community service and weekly domestic violence classes.

Polo G 2021 Arrest Footage ... Mouthin' Off in Miami, Never Backs Down!!!
Miami Police have released body cam footage of Polo G's 2021 arrest, and it all unfolds like a night the "RAPSTAR" would probably love to forget.
The footage is related to the story TMZ broke back in June 2021 ... Polo was arrested right after his "Hall Of Fame" album release party with both cops and the Chicago-bred rapper claiming they were roughed up in the process.
Charges of Resisting an Officer Without Violence were later dropped after Polo completed anger management classes and the newly released footage shows why those were probably necessary.
One portion of the video shows an officer inside a police cruiser using his computer ... as Polo is yelling at him off-camera about his career choices in becoming a cop.
Polo's insults seem to roll off the officer, but then their convo touches on an all-too-real scenario of a cop being killed in the line of duty, leaving his kids fatherless.
Later in the video, Polo is seen getting medical aid as he pleads his case, claiming cops caused him to "blackout" when they first apprehended him. Meanwhile, cops alleged Polo was kicking their car like a madman during the arrest.
His mother/manager Stacia Mac gave a play-by-play commentary of the chaotic incident at the time, claiming her son was racially profiled following the party.
The whole ugly incident is in his rearview now -- Polo's found plenty of "Distractions" as of late, dropping a new song and upcoming album with hip hop beat and BBL producer Southside.

NFL wide receiver David Moore -- who just signed a contract with the Chicago Bears this offseason -- was arrested this month after he allegedly fell asleep in a Taco Bell drive-thru, TMZ Sports has learned.
According to the Gainesville Police Dept., officers found Moore asleep in the driver's seat of a 2018 Ford F250 at the local fast-food joint at around 11:18 PM on July 3.
Cops say they were able to make contact with Moore -- and claim he smelled of weed during questioning.
An ensuing search, police say, revealed he had "a package of THC edible candies along with three pistols" in his car. Moore was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of weapons.
Records show Moore was booked into Cooke County, Texas jail on July 4 ... on the weapon and drug charges. The records show he bonded out a short time later.

— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) September 21, 2020 @MySportsUpdate
Moore -- who's from Gainesville, Texas -- was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 7th round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and quickly became a reliable target for Russell Wilson.
In four seasons with the 'Hawks, he recorded 78 catches for 1,163 yards and 13 TDs.
He later went on to play for the Panthers, Raiders, Broncos and Packers -- before signing with Chicago in April.
Moore is now the third Bear to run into legal trouble this offseason -- receiver Byron Pringle was jailed in April, while linebacker Matt Adams was just arrested last month.

WNBA Star A'ja Wilson Breaks Down in Tears Over Brittney Griner Photos ... 'She's Our Sister'
Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson was brought to tears after seeing Brittney Griner in shackles on Monday -- telling reporters it made her sick to her stomach.
Wilson made the comments just hours after Griner was seen in handcuffs and flanked by guards while at a court in Russia ... getting choked up while talking about it following her game against the L.A. Sparks on Monday night.
"I hated seeing it," Wilson said. "It made my stomach turn."
"That's our sister and I can't imagine what she's going through and I pray every single day that the people that are in high up are doing what they need to do to get her home because it's unacceptable."
The 25-year-old baller prayed the ordeal doesn't put a toll on Griner -- not just physically, but mentally as well.
Griner has been in Russian custody since February -- after she was accused of having hash oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport.
The trial in the 31-year-old Phoenix Mercury star's case is slated to begin Friday. If convicted on the charges, she's facing up to 10 years behind bars.

Vladimir Putin's Spokesperson Griner Isn't Political Prisoner ... She Broke Russian Law
-
Breaking News

Vladimir Putin, through his spokesperson, is talking about Brittney Griner's imprisonment for the first time ... refuting the charge the WNBA star is a political prisoner, saying she's locked up because she violated Russian law.
31-year-old Griner has been behind bars since February after Russian officials say she attempted to bring hashish oil into the country. The U.S., however, characterized her detainment as being politically motivated.
In other words, America believes Griner's being used as a bargaining chip ... as relations between Russia and America (and the West in general) are incredibly strained with war raging in Ukraine.
But, Dmitry Peskov, Putin's mouthpiece, told NBC News Brittney's detainment is simple -- she broke the law, and is being held accountable just like "hundreds and hundreds of Russian citizens that were sentenced for carrying hashish."
Peskov then asked ... "Why should we make an exemption for a foreign citizen?"
Putin's spokesperson also said there are many Americans living legally in Russia.
"[Griner] violated Russian law, and now she’s being prosecuted," Peskov said.
"It’s not about being a hostage. There are lots of American citizens here. They’re enjoying their freedoms … but you have to obey the laws."
Despite Russia's latest claim ... it's likely it'll do little to change the minds of Griner's family, friends, and fans -- and the United States government -- who almost all believe her detainment is motivated by geopolitical issues ... rather than a relatively minor drug infraction.

Trinidad James Too Much Tragedy for ATL Hip Hop ... Shares Last Convo with Trouble
-
Exclusive
Atlanta hip hop culture is having a really rough go of it this year -- but one of the city's beloved rappers, Trinidad James, says the ATL will power through these hard times.
We caught up with the "All Gold Everything" rap star Wednesday at LAX, and it's clear he was traveling with a heavy heart.
Between the murder of Metro Boomin's mom at the hands of her own husband to Young Thug, Gunna and much of YSL's RICO indictments to Lil Keed's sudden death ... ATL rappers have had an extraordinary bad luck streak.
Trinidad attributes the downward spiral to the fact Atlanta's been on top for several years now, and as he puts it -- when you're at the top, "there's all types of energies, people and situations just trying to take you down."
The murder of Def Jam rapper Trouble also weighed on Trinidad ... in the wake of the alleged killer surrendering to cops.
Trinidad told us about a recent text exchange with Trouble, which was their last communication, and it was a lighthearted -- and slightly racy -- joke between friends.
For now, Trinidad is telling everyone in the ATL to be safe and "keep our heads high." Sound advice.

Trevor Reed, a former Marine who was detained in Russia for nearly 3 years, is calling for the release of WNBA superstar Brittney Griner, explaining the conditions in the country are "like you're waking up to a nightmare."
Reed, who just was released from Russian custody as part of a prisoner swap in April, asked for a sense of urgency in the Griner case at a rally organized by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in the hooper's Houston hometown on Monday.

"We need to all speak out for these Americans, because every single one of us is an American," Reed said. "Every day that you're in prison there, it's like you're waking up to a nightmare."
Reed said he believes it's pointless to let Griner's case play out in the court systems in the foreign country ... explaining, "There is no justice in Russia."
"Brittney and Paul [Whelan] will not receive justice in Russia," he said. "They will not receive a fair trial in Russia.”
Griner has been in custody since mid-February -- when Russian authorities claimed she tried to smuggle hashish oil into the country.
Reed said at the rally what she is going through is inhumane ... explaining the conditions that he experienced while in Russian custody included rotten food and lack of adequate medical care.
Griner has another court hearing in Russia slated for later this month ... but Reed said at the rally he's not optimistic it'll lead to anything positive for the 31-year-old Phoenix Mercury center.
"They will be there as hostages until the United States gets them out," he said.

3:51 PM PT -- Federal law enforcement sources close to the investigation tell us the charges have to do with money laundering. He'll be in court next week.
Doc Antle -- who found fame among the sea of characters on 'Tiger King' -- has been arrested in South Carolina.
Online jail records indicate the 62-year-old -- real name, Bhagavan Antle -- was booked within the last hour in Horry County, South Carolina. Interestingly enough, the arresting agency is the FBI ... though, at this time, it's unclear why he's been arrested.
Antle's the owner of Myrtle Beach Safari, and has faced plenty of criticism over the years for his operation, a lot of which has come thanks to celebrity visits he's held.
However, in October 2020 he was indicted in Virginia for felony wildlife trafficking after an investigation found evidence he trafficked lion cubs between South Carolina and Virginia.
After the indictment, Doc told us, “I am terribly shocked and disappointed at the charges that have been filed against me by the Commonwealth of Virginia, and how they have sought to involve my daughters in this matter. I categorically deny any act or conduct that could ever be considered as “animal cruelty."
He's also come under fire from PETA for hosting guests like Larsa Pippen and Chris Brown's daughter, Royalty, and allowing them to interact with young animals.

Brittney Griner's wife is urging Joe Biden to get more involved in the WNBA star's case in Russia ... hoping that'll ultimately help bring home the love of her life.
Cherelle Griner made the plea to the President during a sitdown interview with Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" this week ... explaining she believes Biden could be the key to getting Brittney back on U.S. soil.
"I just keep hearing that he has the power," Cherelle said of Biden. "She's a political pawn -- so, if they're holding her because they want you to do something, then I want you to do it."
Brittney has been detained in Russia since mid-February ... after authorities claimed they found hash oil in her luggage.
Cherelle told Roberts she initially found out about it all through a panicked, early-hours text message from Brittney.
"She started texting me around 2 AM that morning," Cherelle said. "'Babe! Babe! Babe! Wake up! They have me in this room, I don't know what's going on.'"
Cherelle said Brittney told her the authorities were taking her phone and not to text anymore -- and she said outside of written letters, she has not been able to speak to Brittney since.
Cherelle said she has been in contact with Secretary of State Antony Blinken about ways they can bring home Brittney ... but she clearly feels more can be done by the U.S. government.
"I was grateful for their call," she said of the talk with Blinken. "You say she's top priority, but I want to see it. And I feel like to see it, would be me seeing BG on US soil."
Cherelle added being without Brittney -- who's expected to remain in custody in Russia until at least her next court hearing in June -- has been difficult ... and she even broke down in tears during the interview with Roberts.
She did explain, however, that Brittney has told her to remain strong.
"I'm OK because you have to be," Cherelle said ... adding, "I won't go down until she's back."

Brittney Griner will remain in custody in Russia for at least another month ... a judge just denied her request for house arrest, forcing her to stay in jail for another 30 days.
The 31-year-old WNBA superstar appeared in a Russian courtroom on Friday morning with the hopes of getting out of jail ... but her attorney told the Associated Press that did not happen.
The attorney, Alexander Boikov, did say, though, that because of the short nature of the custody extension ... he did believe a trial in Griner's case might be coming soon.
Griner wore an orange sweatshirt to Friday's hearing, and left the courtroom with a hood up over her head. In photos of her leaving her appearance, you can see she was wearing cuffs on her wrists.
As we reported, Griner has been in custody in Russia since February -- after she allegedly had hash oil in her luggage at an airport.
She's now had her requests for house arrest denied at least two times by judges as her pre-trial detention has dragged on.
United States officials, meanwhile, have classified her as "wrongfully detained" ... and are attempting to negotiate her release.
The WNBA and NBA have shown their support for Griner throughout her detention -- with both leagues putting "BG42" logos on their courts. Players from the leagues have been spotted honoring Griner with shirts and other messages as well.
