Flanked by hired muscle, the two singers were all smiles outside the Mondrian hotel on Sunset Blvd. -- posing for fans and even giving some final thoughts on Simon Cowell and Bret Michaels.

Question is ...

'American Idol' Finale -- What the Hell Happened?!

"American Idol" brought out the big guns for their season finale last night -- with some huge stars, shocking moments ...and the return of William Hung!

Check out the photo recap and reminisce on all the highlights!

Toni Braxton Was on the 'Idol' Finale?

Here's Janet Jackson rockin' her natural hair on the "American Idol" finale last night (left) -- and Toni Braxton at some point in the early '90s (right).

Neither had a wardrobe malfunction last night.

We're just sayin'.

Bret Michaels -- American Idol's Big Secret

Bret Michaels could have died a few weeks ago ... yet now we've learned he will take center stage tonight during the finale of "American Idol."

Our "Idol" spies tell us Michaels is at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. and will make a cameo tonight. We don't know what he'll do on stage, but hey ... anything's possible.

UPDATE: Bret just performed -- and we're told he kicked ass. According to our inside sources, the rocker got the biggest applause so far.

UPDATE #2: Here's the video -- it's awesome!

'American Idol' -- Nerves Frayed During Rehearsal

Our spies at the "American Idol" rehearsal today say Crystal Bowersox was so nervous she forgot the words to the song she'll release if she wins tomorrow night. And Lee DeWyze got ticked off after he got hit with a violin bow.

Both Crystal and Lee will each sing 3 songs. The first song is their choice, the second was chosen by Simon Fuller and the third song is the one that will be released by the winner.

Crystal chose "Me and Bobby McGee" for her first song. Fuller had her sing "Black Velvet." As for the song she'll release ... it's called "Up to the Mountain." Crystal stopped dead in her tracks in the middle of the song and started over.

As for Lee, he chose, "The Boxer," and Fuller selected "Everybody Hurts." As for the song he'll release if he wins ... it's called, "Beautiful Day."

As Lee finished "Beautiful Day," a violinist accidentally hit him in the body with his bow. Lee was upset and walked off the stage .... even before the pretend judges could weigh in.

Should be interesting.

Paula Abdul -- Fit for the 'Idol' Finale

Paula Abdul will make her triumphant return to "American Idol" tomorrow night -- and she's making damn sure she looks better than everyone else.

Abdul rolled over to the really fancy ... and really expensive ... Lloyd Klein House of Couture yesterday, where she reportedly picked out an outfit for Simon Cowell's big send-off.

FYI -- Lloyd Klein has designed red carpet dresses for some of the biggest stars in the world, like Eva Longoria, Kate Beckinsale and Renee Zellweger.

Hopefully, Paula won't just let her dress do the talking during the show.

By the way, Paula taped something for a "Simon Farewell" package that will run on the show tomorrow.

Clay Aiken Shows Off His New Beard

Carrying his own bags and rockin' some face scruff, Clay Aiken arrived at LAX on Monday.

With the country about to anoint a new winner this week, can you believe it's been seven years since the 31-year-old father of one lost to Ruben Studdard on "American Idol?"

Lee DeWyze -- The Odds Are in His Favor

The smart money is on Lee DeWyze to win "American Idol" -- in fact, dude has become the odds on favorite to win the show ... this according to one of the biggest gambling sites in the world.

The gambling experts at BoDog.com have decided that Lee's odds to win the show are 1/2 -- while Crystal Bowersox is at 3/2.

Translation -- a $2 bet would pay back $3 on Lee (the favorite) and $5 on Crystal (the underdog).

But the odds don't always predict the winner -- last year, Adam Lambert was the odds on favorite to win ... and we all know how that worked out.

Lee DeWyze Stands Alone

After nailing his rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," "American Idol" finalist Lee DeWyze was spotted leaving the show's set alone on Tuesday.

Either Lee, Bowersox or the other guy will be sent home tonight.

Ryan Seacrest vs. TMZ

"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest dared TMZ on his radio show to find a VHS tape of him as a kid dressed as a rock star singing Bon Jovi ... well, it was as easy for us as it was humbling for him.

Seacrest was 9 when he locked his bedroom door, put on what looks to us like Playtex gloves and did the most awful rendition of "I'd Die for You" ever recorded.

We found the "performance" on a tape of his TV show, "On-Air with Ryan Seacrest." When we watched the tape, we doubled the average viewership of that show.

Oh yeah, he does have "Idol" and 34 other shows. He wins.

'Idol' Contestants No Shtupping the Judges

TMZ obtained a copy of the contract every "American Idol" contestant must sign before going on the show -- and one thing is perfectly clear .... Ryan, Randy, Ellen, Kara, Simon, Theodore and Alvin are not available for their pleasure.

According to the legal doc -- a copy of which was filed in court because a contestant was a minor -- the contestants promise the following: "Neither I nor any members of my family or my friends will enter into any personal, social, business, and or financial relationships with any of the judges, host(s), guest stars ..." The prohibition runs for the duration of the show and 6 months thereafter.

But the way we see it ... there's no way the contract can bind family or friends. Nonetheless, it's a good threat, because according to the doc, a contestant will be disqualified for violating the rule and forfeit any prize money.

And in the money department ... here's the way it breaks down.

Howard Stern: I'm Too Good for 'American Idol'

Howard Stern won't take Simon Cowell's spot on "American Idol" -- and it's not because they won't cough up that $100,000,000 he wanted for the gig ...

Kris Allen -- Dripping with ... Muscles?!

"American Idol" winner Kris Allen doesn't have to worry about anyone judging his body too harshly.

The married 24-year-old showed off his buff and mostly smooth torso while on vacation in the Bahamas this weekend.

This is how an Idol gives back.

Kris Allen A Window Into My Crotch

Kris Allen didn't just open for Lady Antebellum last night at the Wiltern in L.A. ... he also opened his fly for the entire audience.

After getting through his first set without any hardware malfunctions, the "American Idol" champ returned to the stage at the end of the show to perform "Hey Jude" -- with his zipper down.

Check out his reaction when someone in the audience tells him to XYZ -- priceless.

'American Idol' Front-Runner Almost Quit

TMZ has learned "American Idol" contestant Crystal Bowersox threw in the towel a little more than two weeks ago and was walking off the show, when Ryan Seacrest did some fast-talking and changed her mind.

It went down in a parking lot after an "A.I." show. In front of several people, Crystal told Ryan she couldn't handle the competition.... she said she hated the attention and said to Seacrest, "What's the point?"

Crystal said she was going back to Ohio to be with her family, whom she missed terribly.

Ryan told Crystal that being on "Idol" was like starting a business, and if she won she'd get a recording contract and become a millionaire.

Seacrest sealed the deal by telling her, "The greatest thing I ever did was make enough money so I could buy my mom a house. You can buy your mom a house."

Seacrest out ... Crystal, not out.
