Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have a problem ... she definitely doesn't like him, and he may feel similarly, but they're promoting a movie they did before the bitter breakup ... so they resorted to a hug.

The couple broke up last year, and we're told it was the opposite of friendly. She didn't much care for him ... is the nice way of saying it.
