Justin Bieber grabbed his skateboard at 1 AM Monday to jet around the streets of NYC ... as he awaits word on whether or not his new album "Purpose" will debut at #1.

Bieber -- who is facing stiff competition for the top spot from One Direction -- was seen performing tricks on the streets of Manhattan without a soul around him.

This just in ... it looks like Bieber will squeak past 1D for the title.
