Stevie Wonder rang in his 65th birthday by surrounding himself with his closest friends -- some of whom proceeded to bust out impressions of the legendary musician ... and Stevie had a blast.

TMZ obtained video from inside Stevie's party ... which went down at The Attic in Hollywood Wednesday night. Our sources say handlers had told Stevie he was going to a recording session -- so he was totally shocked when he walked in and heard the birthday cheers.

Stevie made it clear he'd rather listen to other people sing, than perform himself ... it was HIS birthday, after all -- and his celeb pals obliged.

Tyrese, Janelle Monae, Chante Moore, Johnny Gill, and Tommy Davidson joined him onstage -- and you've gotta see Gill's performance.
