Mel Gibson made a surprise appearance Thursday night at the "Mad Max: Fury Road" premiere in Hollywood ... where he came face-to-face with the guy who's carrying on his road warrior legacy.

It's been 36 long years, a few gray hairs, and the occasional tirade since Mel played the title character in his first big movie role.
