Darren Sharper is sitting in a downtown L.A. jail right now ... after surrendering in connection with the New Orleans arrest warrant accusing him of raping 2 women.

The warrant was issued Thursday in New Orleans. Cops believe Sharper and an acquaintance raped 2 women in an apartment back in September.



Sharper did not want to be a man on the run, so he turned himself in last night -- ironically in the same city where he's accused of raping 2 other women.

Sharper is being held without bail and authorities tell us ... as of the time of this posting, he will sit in jail until Monday, when he goes before a judge.
