Tom Petty Won't Sue Chili Peppers
By now anyone within earshot of a radio has heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Dani California." If you thought the song sounded like something you'd heard before, you weren't alone. Apparently Tom Petty felt the song sounded very similar to his hit "Mary Jane's Last Dance," which was as famous for the video starring Kim Basinger.
Early reports had Petty mulling over a lawsuit. But, in a recent chat with Rolling Stone, he says actually doesn't mind a little borrowing of his music:
"The truth is, I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took "American Girl" [for their song "Last Nite"], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, 'OK, good for you.' It doesn't bother me."
So, he's certainly not going to sue...this time:
"If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe. But I don't believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous lawsuits in this country without people fighting over pop songs."
See, not all rock stars are petty.
