Hollywood's most talked about couples, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, both took their on-screen chemistry off-screen in 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and 'The Break-Up.' But which couple made bigger bucks opening weekend at the box office?
Vaughniston's movie might have been #1 this weekend, bringing in over $38 million, but the almighty powers of Brangelina still trumped them. 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' raked in over $51 million its opening weekend, ironically nearly one year to the day of 'The Break-Up's release. Wow- how things can change in a year, eh?
'The Break-Up's $38 million take makes it the most successful summertime romantic comedy and the third highest-grossing ever, after '50 First Dates' and 'Hitch.' Optimistic forecasts had the film opening in the $20-25 million range.
'The Break-Up's good fortune couldn't have come at a better time for Aniston. The former TV star saw her last three films ('Derailed', 'Rumor Has It' and 'Friends With Money') debut to less than stellar box-office returns and had many questioning her cinematic clout.
Vince Vaughn seems to be the best at capitalizing on all the on- and off-screen drama... he starred in both 'The Break-Up' (which he also wrote) and 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith.'
While it's no Shiloh Nouvel, 'The Break-Up,' at least for now, is still something Aniston can brag about.
