THE RUMOR: Nick Lachey is dating Kristin Cavallari
HOW IT STARTED: Lachey was spotted last month holding the 'Laguna Beach' beauty's hand and flirting with her at the birthday party of his pal, A.J. DiScala, held at the hip W Hotel in New York.
HOW IT SPREAD: Lachey, 32, and Cavallari, 19, were spotted at the same W Hotel again a few weeks later -- this time, Kristin was at a "private party" in Nick's suite.
And they've been seen on the left coast as well. The pair resurfaced on Hollywood's rumor radar when they dined late last month at Palomino and early this month at the ever-trendy Koi. But there's confusion too. Each has been seen out and about without the other, especially over the last few weeks.
THE TMZ LOWDOWN: Cavallari has been on the rebound since breaking up with boyfriend Brody Jenner. We're told Nick is still reeling from the demise of his marriage to Jessica Simpson. Nick's friends say he's not really available yet for a new relationship.
Furthermore, sources in Nick's world tell TMZ his friends are concerned that Kristin is using whatever relationship she has with him to further her career.
The warnings may have taken -- a few weeks ago, Lachey gave Cavallari the cold shoulder at a West Hollywood nightclub. As she danced with her gal pals, he openly flirted with other women and ignored her. Two days after the snub, Nick was back flirting up a storm at Premiere magazine's Oscar party.
And, on March 20, when asked by a paparazzo when she was going to see Nick again she snapped: "I'm not talking to you about that."
