Making Sense of Celeb Scents
Celebrity scents are nothing new -- Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds was a huge seller when it came out in the '80s -- but now there are more star-peddled perfumes on the market than ever.
For women, there are fragrances from J.Lo, Britney, Jessica Simpson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashanti, the Olsen twins, Beyonce and Kimora Lee Simmons. Men have, amongst others, Alan Cumming's 'Cumming.'
So who do most people want to smell like this season?
For a very unscientific look at which celeb fragrances are seeing the highest sales, TMZ checked in with some of the top retailers around Los Angeles.
According to sales representatives from Macy's, Sephora and Wal-Mart, the list of top sellers is like a who's who of weekly gossip magazines: Fantasy by Britney Spears, Live from J.Lo, and Just Me from Paris Hilton.
At Macy's, Sarah Jessica Parker's new perfume, Lovely, is also flying off the shelves. Shania Twain and Ashanti's brand new perfumes are going quickly at Wal-Mart, along with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's scent for the younger crowd.
On the flip side, Tommy Hilfiger's True Star, endorsed by Beyonce Knowles, and Kimora Lee Simmons' new Baby Phat scent Goddess, haven't received the attention retailers expected.
The nose knows what it truly likes, as celebrity scents are not on the wane: 2006 will see fragrances from pop tart Hilary Duff, Madonna, and Andre Agassi and wife Steffi Graf's his-and-her scents.
